What does the Global Entry do?

One of the most significant advancements in international travel in recent years has been the introduction of Global Entry, a program developed by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). With the primary goal of expediting the immigration and customs process, it is a boon for frequent international travellers. This article explores the key features of the Global Entry program and how it can redefine your travel experience.

It is a pre-approved clearance program for low-risk travellers, providing them with an expedited clearance process when arriving in the United States. The program is primarily designed to minimize waiting times at customs and immigration checkpoints, offering pre-approved travellers a fast and seamless way to enter the U.S. upon returning from international destinations.

How Does Global Entry Work?

To benefit from the program, travellers must apply online and submit a non-refundable application fee. Once the application is accepted, the next step involves a thorough background check, followed by an in-person interview at an Enrollment Center.

Upon successful completion of the process, travelers are provided with a Known Traveler Number (KTN) and are eligible to use dedicated Global Entry kiosks at participating airports. These kiosks use biometric technology such as fingerprint recognition to verify the traveler’s identity, replacing the need for traditional customs declaration forms and queueing. After answering a few customs declaration questions at the kiosk, the traveler receives a transaction receipt and proceeds to baggage claim and exit.

The Perks of Global Entry

Besides the advantage of expedited clearance, the members also benefit from TSA Pre✓®, another trusted traveler program in the U.S. This feature provides expedited security screening at participating U.S. airports for both domestic and international flights.

What does the Global Entry do?

Global Entry is a program run by U.S. Customs and Border Protection that allows expedited clearance for pre-approved, low-risk travellers upon arrival in the United States. The main objective of to simplify and speed up the immigration and customs process for frequent international travellers.

Here’s what Global Entry does in more detail:

  • Expedited Processing at Customs and Immigration: Upon arrival in the United States, the members can bypass the traditional customs and immigration lines and proceed to the kiosks. These automated kiosks use fingerprint biometrics to verify the traveler’s identity and ask a few customs declaration questions. The process is typically much faster than the traditional customs and immigration checks.
  • TSA Pre® Benefits: The members are also eligible for the benefits of the TSA Pre✓® program at no additional cost. This offers expedited security screening at participating U.S. airports for domestic and international flights, which often means shorter lines and quicker passage through airport security.
  • Reduces Paperwork: The automated kiosk system used for eliminates the need for filling out a customs declaration form, further expediting the process.

Remember that while the program offers a more streamlined and efficient travel experience, travelers must still abide by all customs, immigration, and agriculture laws and regulations of the United States.

Who is Global Entry available to?

The  program is available to:

U.S. Citizens

American citizens are eligible for the program.

Mexican nationals may also apply for the program, although they are subject to specific requirements.

Canadian NEXUS members

Canadians who are part of the NEXUS program also receive benefits, as NEXUS includes Global Entry benefits in its package.

In addition to these basic eligibility requirements, applicants must possess a machine-readable passport or permanent resident card, must be in good legal standing, and must not have provided false information on their application. They must also pass a rigorous background check and in-person interview.

Please note that the exact eligibility requirements can change, and it’s best to check the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) website for the most up-to-date information.

Is Global Entry only for US citizens?

No, it is not only for U.S. citizens. While U.S. citizens and U.S. lawful permanent residents are eligible for the program, It is also available to citizens of select foreign countries that have entered into a trusted traveler arrangement with the United States.

As of the latest information available to me, these countries included:

  • Argentina
  • India
  • Colombia
  • United Kingdom
  • Germany
  • Panama
  • Singapore
  • South Korea
  • Switzerland
  • Taiwan
  • Mexico

Canadian citizens and residents are also eligible for Global Entry benefits through the NEXUS program, which is a joint Canada-U.S. program designed to expedite border crossings for low-risk, pre-approved travelers into Canada and the United States.

However, please note that the list of eligible countries can change over time, so it’s always a good idea to check the most current information on the U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s website or the respective governmental agency responsible for such programs in your own country.

In addition to this, regardless of citizenship, all applicants must pass a rigorous background check and in-person interview before they can be enrolled in the Global Entry program.

How do I get a Global Entry visa?

It is not actually a visa; it’s a program managed by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) that provides expedited entry into the United States for pre-approved, low-risk travelers. To apply for Global Entry, you must follow a multi-step process:

  • Create a Trusted Traveler Programs (TTP) Account: Visit the TTP website and create an account.
  • Submit an Application: Log in to your TTP account and complete the  application. The application requires personal and background information.
  • Pay the Application Fee: There’s a non-refundable $100 application fee that you must pay when submitting your application.
  • Undergo a Background Check: Once your application is submitted and the fee is paid, CBP will review your application. If your application is conditionally approved, then CBP will conduct a thorough background check to ensure that you meet all the eligibility requirements.
  • Complete an Interview: If your background check is successful, you’ll be invited to schedule an interview at an Enrollment Center. At the interview, a CBP officer will ask you questions, take your photo, and collect biometric information, for example, fingerprints.
  • Receive Global Entry: If your interview is successful, you’ll be admitted into the  program. You’ll receive a Known Traveler Number (KTN) that you can use to enjoy expedited processing through CBP, and you will also be eligible for TSA Pre✓® at participating airports in the U.S.

Remember, even though it’s often referred to as such, Global Entry does not replace a visa. If you are a citizen of a country that requires a visa to enter the U.S., you will still need that visa even if you have Global Entry. Global Entry simply speeds up the process of getting through immigration and customs once you arrive in the U.S.

Is Global Entry good for international travel?

Yes, Global Entry is excellent for international travel, especially for frequent travelers. It’s designed to expedite the customs and immigration process when entering the United States from an international destination.

Here are a few reasons why Global Entry can be beneficial for international travel:

  • Expedited Entry into the U.S.: Upon arrival in the U.S., Global Entry members can proceed directly to the automated Global Entry kiosks in the immigration checkpoint area. This allows them to bypass the regular immigration lines, which can significantly cut down on wait times.
  • Less Hassle: Instead of filling out a customs declaration form and talking to an immigration officer, Global Entry members just need to scan their passport, provide their fingerprints for biometric verification, and answer a few questions at the kiosk.
  • TSA Pre® Benefits: Global Entry members also receive TSA Pre✓® benefits, which allow for expedited security screening at participating airports in the U.S. This can save time not only when returning from international travel, but also for domestic travel within the U.S.
  • Access to Other Programs: It may also provide access to expedited entry benefits in other countries through mutual arrangements. For example, as of my last training cutoff in September 2021, Global Entry members could apply for the Dutch FLUX program, the Korean SES program, and the Mexican Viajero Confiable program.

Keep in mind, however, that Global Entry is not a substitute for a visa. If a visa is required for travel to a certain country,  members must still obtain the necessary visa.

How many airports accept Global Entry?

There were over 75 airports worldwide that had Global Entry kiosks and accepted the program. These airports include major international airports across the United States, as well as select airports in Canada, Ireland, and the Caribbean that offer U.S. pre-clearance.

It’s important to note that the list of participating airports can change and expand over time as the program continues to grow. Therefore, for the most current and detailed list, it’s recommended to check the U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s (CBP) website.

It also extends to land and sea ports of entry across the United States. This allows members to benefit from expedited processing through customs and immigration regardless of their mode of travel.

Moreover, remember that membership includes TSA Pre✓® privileges, which provide expedited security screening at over 200 U.S. airports as of my last update. This further enhances the convenience of the program for both domestic and international travel.

How long is Global Entry valid?

Membership is valid for five years from the date of approval. After this period, members need to renew their membership if they want to continue enjoying the benefits of the program.

Renewal involves a similar process to the initial application: you will need to log into your Trusted Traveler Programs (TTP) account, complete the renewal application, and pay the non-refundable application fee. In some cases, a new interview may not be necessary, but U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) reserves the right to require an interview for any renewal application.

You can apply for renewal up to one year before your Global Entry membership expires. It’s advisable to start the renewal process well in advance of the expiration date to avoid any period without the benefits, as processing times can vary. After approval, the renewed membership will be valid for another five years.

It’s also worth noting that if you get a new passport or if your legal name changes during your period of membership, you must update this information in your TTP account. Failure to do so could lead to difficulties using the Global Entry kiosks.

How much is Global Entry per year?

The program charges a one-time application fee of $100 which covers a period of five years, if approved. Therefore, on a per-year basis, the cost of Global Entry would effectively be $20 per year.

This application fee is non-refundable, even if the application is not approved. Additionally, if your application is approved, the $100 fee will not be refunded, even if you don’t use the benefits.

Please note that these prices are accurate as of my knowledge cutoff in September 2021, and I don’t have real-time pricing information. For the most accurate and up-to-date fee information, please check the U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s website or the Trusted Traveler Programs portal.

Advantages of Global Entry

Administered by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection, is a program designed to expedite the customs and immigration process for pre-approved, low-risk travelers arriving in the United States. There are several key advantages to having Global Entry:

  • Expedited Entry Process: One of the primary benefits of the expedited entry process into the United States. Instead of standing in long lines at immigration, members can go straight to the dedicated kiosks. This can significantly reduce waiting times after a long international flight.
  • TSA Pre® Included: Membership also includes TSA Pre✓® This allows members to use expedited security lines at participating airports when flying domestically within the U.S. and in some cases, for international departures as well. TSA Pre✓® members do not have to remove shoes, laptops, liquids, belts, and light jackets during the security screening process.
  • Less Paperwork: The members do not need to fill out a customs declaration form upon arrival in the U.S. The questions that would typically be on this form are instead answered at the kiosk.
  • Availability at Numerous Airports:  Over 75 airports around the world had kiosks. This includes the majority of airports in the U.S. that handle international flights, as well as some airports in Canada, Ireland, and the Caribbean with U.S. pre-clearance facilities.
  • Access to Other Programs: In some cases, it can provide expedited entry benefits in other countries through reciprocal arrangements. For example, members could apply for the Dutch FLUX program, the Korean SES program, and the Mexican Viajero Confiable program.
  • Reduced Hassle: Perhaps one of the most significant benefits of this is the reduction in stress and hassle when travelling. Knowing you have a streamlined process to re-enter the U.S. can make international travel more enjoyable and less stressful.

Remember that while it provides these benefits, it does not replace a visa or any other required documentation for international travel. Also, the program is contingent upon a thorough background check and an in-person interview, so not all applicants will be approved.

Disadvantages of Global Entry

While there are numerous advantages to the program, there are also a few potential drawbacks to consider:

  • Cost: The $100 application fee for it can be a significant upfront cost, especially for families or individuals who do not travel internationally frequently. It’s important to note that this fee is non-refundable, even if the application is denied.
  • Application Process: The application process can be time-consuming. It requires an online application, a background check, and an in-person interview at an Enrollment Center. These centres may not be conveniently located for all individuals, and there can sometimes be delays in scheduling an interview.
  • Limited Availability: While it is available at many major airports, it’s not available everywhere. If you often travel through airports that do not have kiosks, you may not be able to take full advantage of the program.
  • Eligibility Requirements: Not everyone is eligible for. It requires a rigorous background check, and individuals with certain criminal histories or violations of customs, immigration, or agricultural laws may be ineligible. It’s also only available to U.S. citizens, U.S. lawful permanent residents, and citizens of certain other countries.
  • Potential for Revocation: Membership can be revoked at any time if a member violates certain rules. This could include providing false information on the application, being convicted of a crime, or being found in violation of any customs, immigration, or agriculture regulations.
  • No Guarantee of Faster Entry: While generally speeds up the process of entering the U.S., there can still be delays, especially if there are issues with the kiosks or if additional questioning is required.
  • Maintenance: Changes to personal information, such as renewing a passport or changing your name, must be updated in the system. If you fail to update your information, it could cause difficulties when trying to use the program.

While these disadvantages exist, many frequent travellers find that the benefits of outweigh the potential drawbacks.
