While business cards can be of any size or shape and made of any material, most paper rectangles are of standard dimensions.

A typical business card size in the United States (and most countries) is 3.5 inches by 2 inches. Most of the templates you will find in the desktop version or business card software, and the free business card templates on the web are designed for this size chart.

Ideally, your card will be large enough to contain relevant information about your business and small enough to fit in a wallet or purse.

East and business cards

For the most part, in Western countries, business cards are exchanged as morphology, and there is no expectation from both parties on how to receive the card or any actual etiquette for those who issue their card first.

But in some Eastern cultures, especially Japan, there are some social rules about giving a business card to another person. Must present the card with both hands, held in the corner so that the recipient can read the printed information. It is considered safe to obtain that information.

Then the person who receives the card should read the card and thank the presentation. It’s a slightly better way to deal with the card business; most people also know the feeling of handing over a business card to someone we want to connect with, only to see the person change it in their pocket without looking at it.

Business card design

They can be horizontal (landscape) (3.5 cm wide or long and 2 cm high) or vertical (portrait) (3.5 cm high and 2 cm wide). The landscape is the most common trend, but this is an area where you can get a little creative; as long as you keep things the same, vertically oriented cards will fit just as well in someone’s wallet.

Folded business cards (also called double or brochure business cards) are usually about 3.5 inches by 4 inches folded into 3.5 by 2. They can be designed as top folding cards or side folds. These are trickier because the scroll adds volume and may be harder to fit in the recipient’s wallet or pocket.

When designing business cards with bleeding, use a file size of 3.75 inches by 2.25 inches; For a broken business card, the document would be 3.75 inches by 4.25 inches.

As a general guide, use marbles at least 1/8 to 1/4 of an inch to prevent texts or images from being accidentally cut during printing and editing.

Standard size for business cards

Countries that use ISO paper can use A8 or ID-1 sizes for standard business cards. But no matter the standard in your country, you are not required to use certain business cards.
